Ireland to make World Tour hosting debut

Lausanne, Switzerland, January 28, 2020 – The Republic of Ireland will make its FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour debut in 2020 when it hosts a men's 1-Star tournament in Bettystown.

The tournament in the Emerald Isle will run from July 17 to 19 and is one of five 1-star European tournaments to be organised in tandem with the European Volleyball Confederation (CEV) in 2020, with additional events to be announced in late February.

Bettystown lies an hour north of Irish capital Dublin and features an 11-kilometre beach where the action will take place. In June 2019 the beach hosted Pool C of the CEV Continental Cup in the first phase of qualifying for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.

To be confirmed, Baden in Austria is likely to organise a second tournament on the 2019-2020 World Tour. The spa town near Vienna will host the Olympic-qualifying Continental Cup in May and is also preparing to organise a 1-Star double gender event from May 21-24 at the Strandbad venue.

Ios in the Greek Islands will welcome a World Tour event for the second successive year when a double gender tournament takes place from June 12-14, with the hope that local favourites Dimitra Manavi and Konstantina Tsopoulou can repeat their success in the women’s competition.

Congress Square in the heart of Slovenian capital Ljubljana will host a 1-Star double gender event from July 30 to August 2.

A fifth FIVB/CEV 1-Star event will take place in one of the continent’s smallest countries, Liechtenstein. Its capital Vaduz closes out the currently confirmed series of 1-Star events for 2019-2020 in Europe with a double gender tournament in the shadow of the Alps from August 5 to 9.

Boracay event cancelled
The event scheduled to take place in Boracay, Philippines in March, however, has been cancelled following difficulties faced by the promoter. The 2019-2020 World Tour features a total of 45 events with highlights including 5-star tournaments in Rome (Italy), Gstaad (Switzerland), Vienna (Austria) and Hamburg (Germany), with the top teams in the world also participating in the beach volleyball tournament at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games from July 25 to August 8.
